Core Defense is one of the hottest, most talked about topics in martial arts today. With thousands upon thousands of people training in various forms and styles of martial arts it is no surprise that many individuals are struggling with the concept of core strength training. In this article I want to discuss some of the best core strength training exercises you can do to build up your core strength quickly.

The first exercise, you will want to do is one of the most basic movements you will be doing in your martial arts classes. The butterfly sweep is a very simple move that is easy to learn and does a great job at strengthening the muscles in your stomach. The butterfly sweep is a very basic but very effective core strength exercise. To perform the butterfly sweep all you need to do is to bend at the knees and then sweep your hips out to the side so you are facing the sky.

After you have done this basic arm positions for a few times and you feel comfortable with this routine then it's time to start working on the side sweep. To perform the side sweep all you need to do is turn your back into a ninety degree angle and then bend at the waist to bring your head back behind your right shoulder.

When you bring your head back, it's important that you have a straight back so that the sweep doesn't slip through your legs. As you bring the back of your head back over the right shoulder, you should be pushing your chest out as if you're trying to get air. This will help you to strengthen and build up your pectoral muscles and will make your butterfly sweep much stronger.

To perform the side sweep all you need to do is raise up to a standing position and then lower yourself down to the ground to finish the movement. To do the side sweep correctly you need to use the momentum that is generated by your body turning into your initial stance to bring yourself up and then you simply bend at the waist to bring your head back behind your right shoulder.

The basic movements that we have talked about here will help you strengthen all of your major muscle groups in your abdomen. Once you master the butterfly and side sweep then you can progress to a more advanced routine that will really challenge your core muscle strength. It is also important that you work on increasing the number of weights used on each routine to ensure that you are building the largest amount of muscle mass possible in these specific muscle groups. After you master the butterfly and side sweep then you will be ready to begin working on the front kicks and other types of strikes which rely heavily on your core.
